The SAT Is an Argument Comprehension Test

This distinction matters more than almost anything else in SAT prep. The SAT does not ask students to summarize what they read. It asks them to identify how a writer structures a point of view, why a sentence appears where it does in an argument, and what conclusion the passage explicitly supports — as opposed to what feels reasonable or true in the real world.

On the Digital SAT, passages run 50 to 150 words with one question per passage. There is no time to read slowly, annotate extensively, or infer meaning from surrounding context the way a student might in an AP English class. Every second spent re-reading a passage because it “didn’t quite make sense yet” is a second lost. The passages are short enough that the information needed to answer the question is almost always within a sentence or two of a structural signal — a transition word, a colon, a clause beginning with “however” or “therefore.”

Understanding this shifts the entire preparation strategy. The goal is not to understand the passage in the abstract. The goal is to locate the specific part of the passage that answers this specific question — and to do it with enough precision and speed to work cleanly through both modules.


The Eight Question Types on the Digital SAT

One of the most underused advantages in SAT prep is knowing, before you even read a question, what category it belongs to. Every question on the Digital SAT Reading section falls into one of exactly eight types. Each type requires a different approach, and confusing them is one of the most reliable ways to lose easy points.

Students who can identify the question type in under five seconds before touching the passage operate from a fundamentally different position than students who read each question fresh. Type recognition converts a chaotic 32-minute section into a repeatable, process-driven exercise.


The Logic-First Four-Step Framework

This is the core of everything we teach in our SAT prep course at Gangnam Prep. The four steps below are not a reading strategy — they are a logical procedure. Applied consistently, they eliminate the two most costly student behaviors: picking answers that “sound right” and second-guessing a correct answer after reading a plausible wrong one.

Step 1: Read the question first. Slowly.

Before touching the passage, know exactly what is being asked. Is this a literal comprehension question or a function question? Those require different procedures. A student who confuses “what does the author say about X” with “why does the author mention X” has already answered the wrong question — no matter how accurately they read the passage.

Step 2: Return to the passage and find the relevant section.

Use structural signals as a navigation system. For function questions, read the sentence above and below the referenced line. For main idea questions, read the first and last sentences. For text completion questions, locate the conclusion signal word — “therefore,” “thus,” “consequently,” “as a result.” Do not re-read the entire passage. Locate the one to three sentences that answer this specific question.

Step 3: Form your own answer before looking at the choices.

This step is where most students fail — and where the most points are gained. Before reading options A through D, write or mentally commit to a rough answer in your own words. It does not need to be polished. “The sentence shows contrast to the previous claim” is enough. The purpose is to walk into the choices with an independent answer already formed. Wrong-answer choices on the SAT are engineered to sound plausible. Once a student reads them without a pre-formed answer, the options hijack their thinking. Pre-empting the answer makes the wrong choices visibly wrong instead of temptingly close.

Step 4: Select the matching choice. Read all four in order.

Read every option from A to D. Select the one that matches your pre-formed answer. If it matches, choose it and move forward — do not continue reading to find something “better.” Second-guessing a correct answer is one of the most statistically reliable ways to lose a point you already earned.


The Seven Categories of Wrong Answers

The SAT does not create random wrong answers. Every incorrect choice on the Reading section falls into one of seven categories. Teaching students to identify the category of wrongness is far more durable than telling them a specific answer is wrong on a specific question. Once a student can say “this is half-right, half-wrong” or “this is plausible but unsupported,” they stop trusting gut feeling and start applying logic. That shift is the functional difference between a 600 and a 750.

A student who can work through these categories under timed conditions is not guessing. They are eliminating. That is a fundamentally different cognitive operation — and one that is fully teachable.


Structural Signals: The Answer Key Hidden in Plain Sight

Digital SAT passages are short enough that every word is intentional. Certain words and punctuation marks function as navigational tools that point directly toward the answer. Students who have been trained to slow down at these signals answer correctly at a significantly higher rate than those who skim past them.

The most important signals to internalize:

  • Contrast signalshowever, but, yet, although, despite, in contrast, while: flag a shift in the argument. The position AFTER these words is usually the author’s actual claim.
  • Causation signalstherefore, thus, consequently, as a result, so, because, since: indicate a conclusion. Text Completion blanks almost always follow these words.
  • Elaboration signalsfurthermore, moreover, in addition, indeed, in fact: signal that a previous claim is being reinforced.
  • Colons and dashes: always signal that a definition, explanation, or key point follows immediately.
  • Italics: used for emphasis. Slow down at italicized text — it usually carries the answer.
  • Absolute languageonly, never, always: these words are high-value. The test places answers near them frequently, and wrong answers often misuse them.

The Proximity Rule applies to all of these: the answer to most SAT Reading questions is located within one to two sentences of a structural signal. Students who learn to navigate by signal rather than reading every passage from start to finish save significant time and increase accuracy simultaneously.


The Adaptive Format: Why Module 1 Is the Entire Game

The Digital SAT’s adaptive structure changes the strategic calculation in ways that most SAT prep courses do not address directly. Here is what students need to understand:

Module 1 is the same for every student. Your performance in those 32 minutes determines which version of Module 2 you receive. Students who perform well in Module 1 are routed to a harder, higher-ceiling Module 2 — and that harder module is the only path to a score above 700 on Reading & Writing. Students who make careless errors in Module 1, even on questions they could have answered correctly with more care, get routed to an easier Module 2 that caps their score before Module 2 begins.

This makes Module 1 precision disproportionately valuable. It is not just about getting questions right in Module 1. It is about which version of the entire test you unlock. A student who rushes Module 1, scores slightly lower than their ability, and lands in the easier Module 2 has permanently capped their score for that test date — regardless of how well they perform afterward.

The practical implication: Module 1 deserves a deliberate, controlled approach. Speed matters less than accuracy in those first 32 minutes. Apply the Logic-First Framework to every question. Do not rush to Module 2’s perceived difficulty.

Note: Score bands and routing thresholds are not published by College Board and may evolve as the test matures. The strategic principle — that Module 1 performance gates your score ceiling — is structural to the adaptive format and is unlikely to change.


The Ten Student Error Patterns That Cost the Most Points

In 17 years of SAT prep, these are the errors that appear most consistently across students at every score level. Correcting them produces faster improvement than adding new content.

  1. Picking answers that “sound right” instead of answers the passage explicitly supports
  2. Confusing what an author discusses with what an author argues (authors write extensively about views they oppose)
  3. Selecting answers that use exact passage phrasing — this is usually a trap, not a signal of correctness
  4. Scope errors: not noticing when an answer shifts from singular/specific to plural/general
  5. Reading too fast on function and inference questions
  6. Looking at the choices before forming an independent answer — this is the single most expensive habit
  7. Ignoring transitions: skimming “however” and “therefore” and missing the logical structure entirely
  8. Vocabulary overconfidence: knowing a word’s primary definition but missing its secondary, contextual meaning
  9. Not identifying the exact claim on Support/Undermine questions — answering a related but different question
  10. Passive screen-reading instead of deliberate, signal-driven reading

Every one of these errors is correctable. None of them require a student to become a stronger reader in the general sense. They require the student to apply a different procedure — one that is learned and practiced, not intuited.


What This Looks Like in a Gangnam Prep SAT Prep Course
