Minimum-Steps Test: First Gate on Every Math Item

Strong Algebra 2 students overbuild. They solve for every variable in a system when the stem only asks for x + y. They expand a quadratic fully when factoring or structure would finish in one line. The Minimum-Steps Test forces a path map before commitment:

  1. Read the stem slowly. Circle the exact quantity requested (a number, an expression, a count of solutions, a coordinate).
  2. Name two candidate paths in under ten seconds: full solve, rearrange, backsolve from choices, plug a friendly value, or structure recognition.
  3. Pick the shortest path that still proves the answer. If both paths are long, flag for Round 2 rather than starting a narrative you cannot finish.
  4. Execute only after the path is named. Do not “start algebra and hope.”

Desmos is available on both Math modules. It is not free. Opening the calculator costs context-switch overhead before any analysis. The 15-Second Desmos Rule is the second gate, never the first:

  • After Minimum-Steps, ask: can I see a clear algebraic or arithmetic path in two or fewer steps? If yes, keep Desmos closed.
  • Would a graph show an intersection, vertex, root, or solution count that algebra cannot show quickly? If yes, open Desmos and type only what the stem requires.
