Volume of practice is not a methodology. Students who do 2,000 practice problems with the wrong approach don’t improve nearly as much as students who do 200 problems with the right framework.

The answer you want to hear involves a specific, articulable explanation of how the tutor teaches students to think about questions — not just what questions to practice.

1. Is Their Curriculum Built for the Digital SAT?

The Digital SAT launched in 2024 and is fundamentally different from the paper-based test that preceded it. The format, timing, adaptive structure, and question types are all different. Any tutor or program still relying on pre-2024 materials — old Blue Books, paper practice tests, or legacy curricula — is preparing your student for the wrong test.

Ask specifically: “Are all your practice materials from the Digital SAT era? Do you use the Bluebook app for full-length practice tests?” The correct answer to both should be yes.

2. Do They Start With a Diagnostic?

Every effective SAT program starts with a full diagnostic assessment before instruction begins. Without knowing exactly where your student is losing points — and why — there’s no way to build a targeted plan. A tutor who starts teaching content before diagnosing your student is guessing about where to focus.

A proper diagnostic doesn’t just give you a score. It identifies which question types your student misses, whether errors are conceptual or procedural, and where the timing issues are.

3. What Are Their Documented Results?

Ask for specific examples of student outcomes — not averages, but actual students with before-and-after scores. Be skeptical of programs that can only offer vague claims like “students improve an average of X points.” Ask what that average is based on, how many students it includes, and whether it includes students who didn’t complete the program.

4. What Is Their Methodology?

The best SAT tutors have a clearly defined, proprietary methodology they can explain in plain terms. They should be able to tell you specifically how they approach Reading & Writing questions versus Math questions, and how they handle pacing and timing strategy.

Generic answers like “we focus on fundamentals” or “we identify weak areas” are not methodologies. They’re descriptions of what every tutor does. You want to know how — the specific approach that makes their instruction different from self-study.

5. What Is the Instructor’s Experience Level?

There’s a significant difference between a college student who scored well on their own SAT and a seasoned instructor who has taught the SAT full-time for years. The latter has seen hundreds of different student error patterns, knows exactly what to look for in a diagnostic, and has refined their approach through years of iteration.

For a test as high-stakes as the SAT, experience depth matters. Ask how long the instructor has been teaching the SAT exclusively — not as a side job, but as their primary professional focus.
