Focused help where your ACT score needs it
You do not need the same lesson in every section. If English rules seem familiar but answer choices still look interchangeable, or Reading passages consume too much time, targeted instruction can address the decisions behind those missed points.
Olivia works with students building their foundations and strong students aiming for more consistent English and Reading performance. Bring your most recent section scores, target test date, and a few missed questions. The plan starts with your actual work.
ACT English: explain the edit
- Sentence boundaries, punctuation, agreement, modifiers, and parallel structure.
- Concise wording, consistent tone, and clear references.
- Transitions, sentence placement, and the writer’s purpose.
Identify what the question tests, state the rule or purpose, then compare the choices. An answer that merely “sounds right” needs a reason.
ACT Reading: prove the answer
- Main ideas, supporting details, and defensible inferences.
- Author’s purpose, tone, structure, and words in context.
- Comparing perspectives and checking the evidence behind a claim.
Paraphrase the question, return to the relevant text, and separate what the passage says from what an answer choice adds.
A method you can use under time pressure
The Logic-First Framework makes the reasoning visible. Instead of memorizing an explanation after a mistake, students practice identifying the rule, evidence, and trap before committing to an answer.
- Identify the pattern. Separate a knowledge gap from a misread question, unsupported inference, or pacing mistake.
- Practice the decision. Work through targeted questions and explain why the rejected choices fail.
- Apply it on the clock. Adapt 3-Round Scan & Strike to the section: handle confident questions, mark questions that need more work, and return with a deliberate time budget.
The error log records the missed question, corrected reasoning, and a later re-solve. Lesson pacing and practice are adjusted to the student rather than a promised score timeline.
Prepare for the current ACT
ACT’s current published structure gives English 50 questions in 35 minutes and Reading 36 questions in 40 minutes. Science and Writing are optional sections. Use the format for your registered test when planning practice.
Format checked October 17, 2026 against ACT’s official sections and timing guide. This tutoring page focuses on English and Reading. For help choosing a test, read our ACT vs. SAT comparison.
