The most common direction words are: support, undermine, challenge, contradict, reinforce, conclude, follow, suggest, indicate. Underline it. Say it to yourself. That word defines what logical direction the correct answer must travel. An answer that goes the opposite direction is wrong by definition, regardless of how accurate its content is.

Step 2: Trace the Logical Arrow in the Passage

Return to the passage and locate the logical relationship it establishes. Do not simply find the relevant section and read the words. Map the direction:

  • For Text Completion: find the conclusion signal (therefore, thus, consequently, this suggests) and identify what conclusion follows FROM the setup. Draw an arrow: setup → conclusion.
  • For Supporting & Undermining: isolate the exact claim and ask which direction evidence must point to affect that claim. Draw an arrow: evidence → claim (either toward or away from it).
  • For Main Idea: use the contrast transition as a pivot. Everything before “however” is the view being set up to be overturned. Everything after “however” is the author’s actual position. The author’s arrow points toward the post-contrast idea.
  • For Function: determine whether the sentence is adding to the author’s argument or complicating it. Draw an arrow: does this sentence point WITH the argument or AGAINST it?

Step 3: Form a Direction-Specific Independent Answer

The pre-emptive answer written before reading the choices must be direction-specific. It is not enough to write “something about the researchers’ experiment.” Write “evidence that shows the experiment produced the expected result” (for support) or “evidence that shows the experiment produced an unexpected result” (for undermine). The direction must be baked into the independent answer. If the student’s pre-empted answer contains an explicit direction, a reversed choice will fail to match it immediately. The trap fails. This is the entire mechanism by which Step 3 defeats Logic Reversal.

Step 4: Evaluate Each Choice for Directional Accuracy, Not Just Topical Match

When reading answer choices A through D, evaluate each one in two phases. First: is this about the right topic? Second, and separately: does this go in the right direction?
