What an author discusses is the subject matter that appears on the page: a theory, a prior study, a critic’s claim, a historical practice, a scientific observation. What an author argues is the position the author is advancing about that material: accept, reject, qualify, extend, or reframe.

School reading rewards topic recognition. Digital SAT main idea rewards claim recognition. A student can accurately retell every sentence and still miss the item if the chosen answer restates a view the author only presents as background.

Passage pattern (compressed): Many historians have claimed that early railway networks mainly expanded rural markets. Recent archival work, however, shows that urban freight contracts drove route design more than farm demand.

Before any main-idea choice is opened, force a short claim in your own words. This is the Logic-First Framework™ pre-form step specialized for main idea. The goal is a claim, not a topic list. If you cannot produce a short claim, you still only know the subject matter.

  • Weak pre-form: “railways and markets” (topic only)
  • Strong pre-form: “urban freight drove routes” (author’s claim)
  • Wrong-direction pre-form: “railways expanded rural markets” (setup view locked as the author’s claim)

The correct choice must match the strong pre-form in idea, scope, and direction. It almost never copies passage wording. Exact phrasing is often bait. Same idea, different words is the rule, the same rule that governs literal comprehension on other stems.

Note: On overall structure stems, the pre-form names the move pattern (claim then evidence; problem then solution; prevailing view then author’s claim), not a content summary of the topic.
